Daimler AG will bring in a small luxury car to the US by 2012, CEO Dieter Zetsche has told The Wall Street Journal. The car will be pitted against the Audi A3 and BMW’s 1-Series and Mini Cooper. Zetsche said that the small Mercedes-Benz would offer upscale luxury features in a small package. Mercedes-Benz plans to import at least one of four next-generation compact models it will start selling in Europe in late 2011. Zetsche said that while the company believes that customers want cars to show some statement, the “definition of luxury will be somewhat different” since it will have less CO2 emissions and have a more modest look.
