General Motors is on track to see its first monthly sales increase

General Motors expects to have its first monthly sales go up for the first time in 21 months. Official results are to be revealed next week but all the signs are pointing to “a good October,” says Mike DiGiovanni, GM’s executive director of global market and industry analysis.

DiGiovanni disclosed that about 95% of the sales for the month come from the company’s four core U.S. brands — Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac. A year ago, these four brands were responsible for about 85% of the company’s sales. After emerging from bankruptcy in July, GM is in the process of winding down Pontiac and Saturn and selling off Hummer and Saab. Autodata Corp. reveals that GM sold 168,719 vehicles in October 2008, representing a 45.1% decrease from October 2007.
